Butchers hand Devils first loss of season

Thirroul Butchers handed Wests Devils their first defeat of the season with a 24-16 win over the MOJO Homes Illawarra Cup ladder leaders.

A Steve Marsters hat-trick, including the match-winner with two minutes remaining, proved the difference in a hard-fought contest at Gibson Park.

Defending premiers Collegians held their top two spot defeating De La Salle 28-16. De La Salle scored in the 5th minute after centre Tre Fotu scooped up an errant kick from the visitors and raced the length to score. Collies hit back with tries to Josh Dowell and a double to Sam McCann.

The win sets up a mouth-watering 1 V 2 clash for Peter Hooper’s charges against the Devils next week after Wests got the better of the defending premiers 22-10 in their Round 5 clash.

Dapto Canaries scored six tries to the Corrimal Cougars’ four in their 32-18 victory. It took 65 minutes for the Canaries to hit the front after trailing 14-4 at the break. The Cougars extended their half-time lead with a try on the resumption of play before Dapto mounted their comeback.
