All three Steelers teams recorded wins over St George in Round 5 of NSWRL junior representative competitions last weekend in front of a large home crowd at Collegians Sporting Complex
The Steelers recorded a convincing 42-14 victory over archrivals St George in the UNE Harold Matthews Cup on Saturday.
Illawarra scored first points early on through back-rower Dylan Egan and had a narrow 12-8 lead after 20 minutes. The Steelers then improved their lead to 10 points just before the break when fellow second row forward Callum Leikvoll crossed.
The Steelers picked up where they left off when Zakariya Maarbani scored within 60 seconds after kick-off for the second half before the Dragons hit back through Corey Ackers three minutes later. Illawarra went on to score three more tries as halfback Kynan Clough converted six from six on the way to a 28-point win.
The hosts also defeated St George 38-18 in SG Ball Cup after leading 14-6 at the break. Tyrell Sloan scored two tries and Alexander Lobb booted five conversions for the Steelers in the 20-point win over.
In the Tarsha Gale Cup, the Steelers scored six tries to three in a 32-14 win over the Dragons with Salma Nour bagging a double and Tiana Graham converting four from six attempts. The Steelers remain in a three-way battle at the top of the table with the Knights and Tigers.
