Harrigan Premiership Preview | Round 3

In the Harrigan Premiership Match of the Round, Collegians host De La Salle at Collegians Sports Stadium on Sunday afternoon. De La, the only unbeaten side this season, beat Collies twice in the regular season last year; however, Collies beat them in Round 9 and 24-6 in the all-important major semi-final.

Dapto is staring down the barrel of a 0-3 record to start their season as they face up to defending premiers Thirroul. Defeats at the hands of Collegians and Corrimal in their opening rounds have put paid to Canaries Coach Blake Wallace’s hopes of a better start to the 2024 season after losing their first three games last season.

The Butchers will be looking to back up last week’s 26-12 win over Collegians with victory in their first away game of the season. The Canaries grabbed two points from the Butchers in round 9 last season, 22-18, losing the other two encounters 32-10 and 32-8.

Wests will be looking to bounce back from last week’s loss to Thirroul but will have to stem Corrimal’s momentum after the Cougars upset Dapto 16-10 last week. Collies had the wood on the Cougars last season, winning all three clashes convincingly with an aggregate score of 122-8. The Cougars crossing the Devils’ line only twice in 240 minutes.

The Lower Grades

The undefeated Avondale Wombats take on Berkeley in a top-of-the-table clash in the Harrigan Plate. It’s the Wombat’s first season in the reserve grade competition, with the Eagles elevated after their win in the Harrigan Shield competition last season.

The Wombats have had an impressive start in their inaugural season, defeating Dapto 44-28 and Helensburgh 32-20 in their first two outings. Berkeley is coming off a bye but had a convincing 30-4 win over Collegians in Round 1.

In the other games, Dapto meets Thirroul, and Wests hosts the Cougars. Collegians and Helensburgh is the Sunday game.

In Harrigan Shield action on Saturday, the Avondale Greyhounds and Figtree Crushers put their undefeated records up for grabs at Dandaloo Oval. Windang is the only other undefeated team and will host the winless Northern Suburbs Bulldogs. Berkeley is at home to the Wombats, and the Devils meet Corrimal at Parish Park.
