Steelers SG Ball skipper Dylan Egan is calling on his team to get back to basics and go set-for-set when they meet the Balmain Tigers on Saturday at Collegians Sporting Complex.
The team has recorded a win, a draw, and three losses after five rounds and needs to get on a roll in the last four rounds to vie for a spot in the finals.
“If we complete and keep the ball in play, I’m very confident that our defence will be able to hold them out,” Egan says.
“Every game is a grand final from here on in, so we might as well leave it all out on the field.”
Egan, who hails from Gerringong, is into his fourth season at the Steelers and second in SG Ball after spending two years in the Harold Matthews Cup team. He says the captaincy has given him extra motivation this season and has been well backed up by his teammates.
“I’ve been honoured to get the captaincy. We’ve got five or six in our leadership group this year, and many more could have been there. There’s a lot of leaders around training and a lot of youth coming through as well.”
Egan has also spent time training with the St George Illawarra NRL squad and, along with teammates Jett Liu and Savelio Tamale, travelled to Mudgee for the Charity Shield against the Rabbitohs last month. He also recently received a two-month extension to train with the senior squad, allowing him to gain more experience to share with his teammates.

“I’ve found it really rewarding. I’ve learned heaps at Dragons training, and I’ve been very excited to bring that knowledge back down to the SG Ball,” Egan added.
“A lot of it is effort areas, lots of wrestle in contact, pressing on the inside, and marker defence.”
Off the field, Dylan is looking at opportunities in NRL Development and staying around rugby league as much as he can. On the field, he and the SG Ball squad will be hoping for a win against the 11th-placed Tigers this Saturday to launch a late-season run for the finals.
