Applications are now open for Illawarra Rugby League’s 2022 scholarship program, offered in conjunction with our Education Partner UOW College Australia.
“The Steelers are very proud of our association with UOW College Australia,” said Steelers Chairman, Graeme Gulloch.
“We’re entering our fifth year of the Scholarship program and already we’ve assisted some of our future academic and sporting stars begin their careers.”
First launched in 2018, past winners include Lily Rogan (Diploma of Nursing, 2021), Teagan Berry (Diploma of Nursing, 2020] and Melissa Spero [Certificate IV in Fitness, 2019].
Teagan is a former Steelers’ Tarsha Gale premiership winner, who has since gone on to represent Under 19s NSW Women’s Origin team, and the St George Illawarra Dragons in the NRLW.
“It’s been challenging at times trying to juggle my study, training and playing commitments but the UOW College staff have been very helpful whenever I’ve needed support.
“I’ve really enjoyed the practical component of my course and would recommend UOW College to anyone considering a career in nursing.”
Lily was a member of the Illawarra Steelers’ Tarsha Gale side that reached the competition’s semi-finals this year and has just been named in Harvey Norman NSW Country Under 19s Women’s squad.
Meanwhile, Melissa is now coach of the Corrimal Cougars Women’s team and was recently appointed the inaugural Australian Schoolgirls Team coach.
”Our IRL scholarship is ideal for outstanding young people like Lily, Teagan and Melissa who have a career pathway they want to pursue,” says UOW College General Manager, Felix Lanceley.
“As well as pathway programs to UOW, we offer vocational courses that can lead to a career in Fitness, Nursing, Aged Care and Disability Support, so this scholarship program can open up an exciting life change for the winner.
Each year UOW College Australia awards a scholarship to a player or volunteer, affiliated with Illawarra Rugby League, to study an eligible UOW College Australia program with a view to encourage and assist the scholarship recipient to achieve their educational goals.
The scholarship (up to $10,000 value in course fees) is open to all participants over 16 years of age – players, officials, and volunteers – involved in Illawarra Rugby League competitions.
