Canaries down Collies, keep finals dream alive

The finals dream continues for the Dapto Canaries in the MOJO Homes Illawarra Cup, winning their fourth on the trot by taking the scalp of competition frontrunners Collegians. It’s Collies first loss since Round 5, ending a six-game winning streak, and comes a week after Blake Wallace’s men took down another of the competition’s heavyweights in Wests.

The Canaries went to a 6-4 lead at half-time and led 12-6 with just over 20 minutes remaining. Two quick tries from the defending premiers had the home-side faithful on tenterhooks trailing 14-12 with three minutes remaining before a Troy Pieper penalty from 40 metres out was followed by an Aaron Gray flick pass to put winger Jack Piccirilli over the stripe to claim a 20-14 victory.

De La Salle delivered Wests Devils their fourth loss in a row with a 34-18 win at Henson Park, replacing them in second spot on the ladder to sit just one point behind Collies.

Thirroul overcame strong resistance from the Corrimal Cougars in the battle of the beaches. The Butchers recording a 30-18 win to stay one win ahead of the Canaries in their fight for fourth spot.

Three close games in First Division with Helensburgh upsetting competition leaders Wests 28-22, Tigers Dean Rajcinoski and Matthew Anger picking up doubles.

Collegians scraped home 24-22 over Dapto. Corrimal stepped closer to securing a finals berth, edging out Thirroul 24-22 to move three points ahead of fifth-placed Dapto.

In Harrigan Shield action, Berkeley defeated Figtree 22-18 at Berkeley Sports Club, the high-flying Eagles scoring four tries to the visitor’s three in their top-of-the-table clash.
